We've sailed the Ionian with our own kids and with countless families over the years. This route is designed for parents who want adventure without stress — gentle sailing, safe anchorages, and plenty of ice cream stops.

Day 1: Lefkada → Meganisi (12 nm, ~2.5 hours)

Lefkada marina (or Nidri) is your base. Meganisi is just across the channel — an easy first sail. Anchor in Vathi Bay (the "fjord" of Meganisi — stunning and sheltered) or Spilia. Vathi has a few tavernas and a small beach. Kids love the calm water for swimming. Dinner at To Steki tou Yanni — they have a playground and the owners adore children.

Day 2: Meganisi → Kastos (15 nm, ~3 hours)

Kastos is tiny — one village, one road, pure peace. Anchor in the main harbor or the bay just south. The water is so clear you can see the bottom at 10 meters. Great for snorkeling with kids. Simple tavernas, no crowds. We've spent lazy afternoons here watching our kids build sandcastles. Bliss.

Day 3: Kastos → Kalamos (10 nm, ~2 hours)

Kalamos is green and mountainous. Port Leone is an abandoned village by the sea — spooky and fascinating for kids. Episkopi Bay has a lovely beach and a taverna. The sailing between these islands is short — perfect for families who don't want long passages.

Day 4: Kalamos → Ithaca (18 nm, ~4 hours)

Ithaca — Odysseus' home. Vathy is the main port, a deep fjord-like harbor. Anchor in the bay or take a mooring. The town has a playground, shops, and good tavernas. Filiatro Beach is a short walk — golden sand, shallow water, ideal for little ones. Older kids will love the Homer connection; we always tell the story of Odysseus at dinner.

Day 5: Ithaca → Kefalonia (15 nm, ~3 hours)

Kefalonia is the big one — dramatic cliffs, famous beaches. Fiskardo is the prettiest harbor — pastel buildings, chic tavernas, a buzzy but family-friendly vibe. Anchor in the bay or pick up a mooring. There's a small beach and plenty of gelato. For a day trip, visit Myrtos Beach — one of the world's most beautiful. Steep road, but worth it.

Day 6: Kefalonia → Lefkada (25 nm, ~5 hours)

Head back toward Lefkada. Stop at Sivota on the mainland — a popular bay with several tavernas and a sandy beach. Or anchor in one of the bays on the Lefkada coast. Porto Katsiki is iconic but can be rolly; better as a day stop than overnight with kids.

Day 7: Return to Lefkada (10–20 nm depending on overnight)

Short sail back to base. Allow time for packing, cleaning, and one last swim.

Why the Ionian is Perfect for Families

Short sail times (2–4 hours average), gentle winds, sheltered waters, and plenty of sandy beaches. Tavernas are used to kids — high chairs, simple menus, patience. We've seen toddlers become confident swimmers in a week. The pace is relaxed. No 6 am starts. No white-knuckle sailing. Just sunshine, ice cream, and memories.

Last summer we chartered with friends who had never sailed. Their 6-year-old still talks about "when we lived on the boat." That's the magic. Ready to create your own? We'd love to help.
