Greece has clear requirements for bareboat charter. Here's what you need to know — and what to do if you don't have a license.

Greek Requirements for Bareboat

For bareboat charter in Greece, you need a recognized sailing qualification. The most widely accepted is the ICC (International Certificate of Competence), which is the international standard. Many countries issue ICCs — the UK, most of Europe, the US (through various organizations). The RYA Day Skipper is also widely accepted. Greek charter companies typically require a minimum of Day Skipper level or equivalent.

Other Accepted Licenses

RYA Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster. IYT (International Yacht Training) certificates. ASA (American Sailing Association) certifications — often with an ICC conversion. National licenses from some countries (e.g., Germany's SBF See). If you're not sure, ask your charter company before you book. They'll tell you exactly what they accept.

How to Get an ICC

If you have an RYA Day Skipper or equivalent, you can apply for an ICC through the RYA. It's a straightforward process. Some countries have their own ICC-issuing bodies. The ICC is a small card that proves you're competent to operate a boat. It's recognized in most Mediterranean countries.

VHF Radio License

Technically, you need a VHF license to use the radio. In practice, charter companies rarely check. But if you're using the radio for emergencies, you should know the basics. A Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the standard. It's a one-day course in most countries. Worth having.

Nicoleta's Qualification Levels Explained

Competent Crew: You can crew. You can't skipper. Not enough for bareboat.

Day Skipper: Minimum for bareboat. You can plan and execute a passage in familiar waters. Good for the Ionian, Saronic, Dodecanese. With some experience, also fine for the Cyclades in June or September.

Coastal Skipper: More advanced. Better for the Cyclades in July–August when the Meltemi is strong. You've done more miles, more night sailing.

Yachtmaster: Professional level. You can skipper anywhere. I hold Yachtmaster Coastal — it's what I need to work as a skipper.

My Recommendation

Day Skipper + some experience for the Ionian. Coastal Skipper (or strong Day Skipper with lots of experience) for the Cyclades in peak season. If you're not sure, hire a skipper. It's €150–200 per day. You'll learn, you'll relax, and you'll have a great trip. No license needed.
