Saronic Gulf: The Perfect Weekend Sailing Trip from Athens

The Saronic Gulf is Greece's best-kept secret for weekend sailors. An hour from Athens, four stunning islands, and you can do it in three days. We've introduced dozens of friends to sailing here. Here's why it works.
Why the Saronic is Underrated
Everyone flies to Athens for the Cyclades or Ionian. But the Saronic is right there — Alimos or Lavrion marina, 30–60 minutes from the airport. You can land Friday, sail Saturday and Sunday, and be back at work Monday. The islands are close together (5–15 nm apart), the winds are manageable, and it's less crowded than the Cyclades.
Aegina: Pistachios and Ancient Temples
Closest to Athens. The main port is busy, but the island has charm — pistachio groves everywhere, the Temple of Aphaia (as impressive as the Parthenon, some say), and good tavernas. Anchor in Perdika for a quieter vibe — a fishing village with waterfront restaurants. Great first stop.
Poros: Romantic Waterfront
A narrow channel separates Poros from the mainland. The town wraps around a hill — pastel buildings, clock tower, waterfront cafes. Very romantic. Anchor in the bay or take a town quay. Good for an evening stroll and dinner. We've had some of our best meals here.
Hydra: No Cars, Time Capsule
Hydra banned cars in the 1950s. Donkeys and foot power only. The harbor is a crescent of stone mansions — it looks like a movie set. Anchor in the bay (can be rolly) or a nearby cove. Hydra is chic, artistic, a bit pricey. Worth it for the atmosphere. Nicoleta loves the art galleries.
Spetses: Old Money Elegance
Spetses has a refined, old-world feel. Horse-drawn carriages, grand hotels, pine forests. The main town has a long waterfront with tavernas. Good holding in the bay. A perfect last stop before heading back to Athens.
3–4 Day Itinerary Option
Day 1: Athens → Aegina (2 hours). Day 2: Aegina → Poros (3 hours). Day 3: Poros → Hydra (2 hours). Day 4: Hydra → Spetses (4 hours) or back to Athens. You can do a loop or one-way depending on your base.
Perfect for People Short on Time
If you have a week, go to the Cyclades or Ionian. If you have a long weekend and want a taste of Greek sailing, the Saronic is perfect. Short sails, beautiful islands, easy logistics.
Vasile's Story
In 2019, we had friends visiting from Romania — they'd never sailed. We had three days. We took them to the Saronic. Poros, Hydra, back. They were skeptical at first. By day two, they were hooked. They've since done two full-week charters. The Saronic is the gateway drug. Try it. You'll be back for more.
