Sporades Islands: Greece's Best-Kept Sailing Secret

If the Cyclades are Greece's postcard — white villages, blue domes, arid beauty — the Sporades are Greece's secret garden. Pine forests tumble down to turquoise water. The air smells of resin and salt. And it's quieter. After 15 years of sailing Greece, the Sporades remain our favorite escape when we want nature over nightlife.
The Greenest Islands in Greece
Unlike the Cyclades' volcanic rock and scrub, the Sporades are lush. Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros — they're covered in pine. The beaches are often backed by forest, not cliffs. In summer, the contrast of green against blue is unforgettable. It feels more like the Mediterranean of old travel posters — before mass tourism.
Skiathos: 60+ Beaches and Koukounaries
Skiathos has an airport — it's the gateway. The main town is busy in August, but the island has over 60 beaches. Koukounaries is the famous one — a long curve of golden sand backed by pine forest. By boat, you can reach coves that land-bound tourists never see. Anchor in Lalaria (the white pebble beach) or the smaller bays on the north coast. Skiathos is the most developed of the Sporades — good supermarkets, marinas, nightlife if you want it.
Skopelos: Mamma Mia and Authentic Villages
Skopelos is where Mamma Mia! was filmed. The church in the film — Agios Ioannis — is on a rock outcrop; you can anchor below and swim. The main town, Skopelos Town, is a maze of white-washed alleys climbing the hill. No cars in the old center. Glossa, on the northern tip, is even quieter — a traditional village with tavernas that feel decades behind the rest of Greece. We've had some of our best meals here.
Alonissos: National Marine Park and Monk Seals
Alonissos sits in the heart of the National Marine Park — the largest of its kind in Europe. The waters are protected. And here's the magic: the Mediterranean monk seal. One of the rarest mammals on the planet. We've seen them in the waters around Alonissos — twice. I'll never forget the first time. We were anchored in a quiet bay, early morning. A head popped up — curious, dark eyes. Then another. A mother and pup. They watched us for a minute, then slipped away. Vasile was so quiet he didn't even reach for his camera. Some moments you just live.
7-Day Route from Skiathos
Day 1: Skiathos base → Koukounaries or north coast bay. Day 2: Skiathos → Skopelos Town (15 nm). Day 3: Skopelos → Glossa or Panormos (10 nm). Day 4: Skopelos → Alonissos (12 nm). Day 5: Day sail around Alonissos — Steni Vala, Leftos Gialos. Day 6: Alonissos → Skopelos (return). Day 7: Skopelos → Skiathos (15 nm). The legs are short; the pace is relaxed.
Wind Patterns and Best Time
The Sporades get the Meltemi but weaker than the Cyclades. Winds are generally 10–18 knots. It's more forgiving. June and September are ideal — warm, fewer boats, everything open. July and August are busier but still manageable. The infrastructure is less developed than the Cyclades — fewer marinas, more anchorages. That's part of the charm. You're closer to nature.
We keep coming back. For the green. For the seals. For the feeling that Greece has one more secret to share. Ready to discover it? Let's plan your Sporades charter.
